- Describe our relationship and explain why you think I am the best person to write a college recommendation for you.
- What are your future goals? What are your interests? In other words: What do you want to study in college? Is there a particular program, like journalism or nursing, that you are applying for? If so, include some information on why this program is a good fit for you.
- Describe (briefly) the types of schools to which you plan to apply. Why do you think these schools are a good fit for you? (size of school, classes, location – urban vs. rural, types of programs offered, etc.). If there are particular institutions (or one in particular) to which you plan to apply, explain why you want to go there.
- What are your extra-curricular activities, hobbies, passions (not referred to earlier)?
- With regard to my class(es):
- What did you like most about the class? What was the most fun/rewarding/interesting aspect, etc.)
- What do you think you contributed to the class? Describe your contributions to the learning environment (reflective journals, art work, group leadership, thoughtful discussion, etc.)
- What assignment did you complete for the class that you are most proud of (this may or may not be your best grade). Explain why you feel you were successful on this assignment.
- What are your strengths as a student? List at least five adjectives that reflect your strengths.
- What struggles have you faced during the time I have known you? (academic/personal). Explain.

AVID at a Glance
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is designed to help students prepare for and succeed in high school and college. Students in the program commit themselves to improvement and preparation for college. AVID offers a rigorous program of instruction in academic “survival skills” and college level entry skills. The AVID program teaches students how to study, read for content, take notes, organize, and manage time. Students participate in collaborative study groups, or tutorials, led by tutors who use skillful questioning to bring students to a higher level of understanding. Upon acceptance into AVID, students must enroll in at least one PreAP course. AVID is an elective class which meets during the regular school day.
