AP LIterature course description
AP English Literature will give students a learning experience equivalent to a typical undergraduate introduction to literature class. Through close reading of literary texts, students will come to understand how writers use language to make meaning and express their unique point of view.
Our literary analysis will look through the lenses of style and structure, rhetorical strategies, diction, figurative language, imagery, selection of detail, language, and syntax. The course will provide you with a solid overview of the movements that form the history of British and American literature.
Students will master a wide range of literary terms. Learning to write well, particularly when the subject is literature, is a key component of the class.
It is expected that students who take this course will sit for the AP examination in May. It is also expected that students will prepare for this exam and do their best; the exam is the culmination of our work and although it is by no means the only measure of our success here, it is certainly one of the more tangible measures.
I believe that the study of literature in a class like this one will reward you in myriad ways, some very subtle, personal, and unique.
